Unclean Bathroom Tiles
Occasionally a homeowner might find that their bathroom tiles never seem to be clean. No matter how hard we scrum the tiles just seem to attract more dirt. This is not our imagination or some Twilight zone mystery. The tiles are dirty because they have soap scum.
Tiles that are covered with soap scum will always remain unclean because dirt, dust and other substances will stick to the tile surface. If the cleaning method does not remove the soap scum then the problem will persist. all our cleaning effects will be in vain.
This problem with soap scum tend to be more prevalent on floor tiles, but is can sometimes occur on wall tiles as well. The soap has accumulated from earlier cleaning efforts. we must remove the soap if we are to really get the tiles clean.
Removing Soap Scum
- A solution of equal parts water and vinegar with a little dish detergent will break down soap scum. Leave it on the tiles for 15 minutes then scrub clean.
- Baking soda and vinegar will also break down soap scum.
- Tiles shops and hardware stores have products specifically designed to break down soap scum
- A Magic Eraser (melamine) will rub away soap scum. This is useful for small areas.

Stick on tiles avoid most of the problems of traditional tiles, being easy to clean and mold resistant. They rarely suffer from any build up of soap scum. But if they appear to be sticky they can be cleaned with vinegar and bicarb of soda.
